Hi Amy,

Happy Pollen Season!

Oh, the yellow gold has arrived. Here in NC, we are covered in the sneeze-maker-cough-bringer-red-eye-culprit: POLLEN. Welcome to spring! I am delighted with the season change and ready for sunshiny days. April is a busy month for me with a wedding, a funeral, and a music festival. All of these events fill up my heart in the most important way - belonging. My calendar looks crazy but I feel so steady. I guess that’s what happens when you put your time where your heart is.

Here’s to good times, good people, living authentically, and being connected.

Showing up - A case for seeing the real benefits of “irl” (in real life!) connection.

It’s not just pollen season. It’s also WEDDING SEASON. My sweet niece got married this weekend. She’s the first of that generation to do so and the first time my family got to celebrate in this distinct way together. I am swirling in thoughts about family and connection and belonging. Our family lives in four different states; being physically with each other can be a daunting task. It demands effort and thus begs the question, “Is it worth it?”  Here’s some food thought:

Our entire trip lasted 60 hours. We spent 21 hours driving. We spent 15 hours asleep. We spent 6 hours and 40 minutes on wedding events. Of those almost 7 hours, we spent 3 hours and 50 minutes in the presence of our family. That’s less than 7% of our total trip. So really, “Is all that really worth it?? For a tiny, little 7%???”

YES.

How does that work? Well, here’s what happened in “The 7%”:

  • Amazement - when being squeezed in tight hugs!
  • Tenderness - seeing my family overcome and tearful when looking at my son’s face.
  • Pleasure - hearing, “I was hoping you’d be here.”
  • Privilege - witnessing my new nephew-in-law as he stood alone, ready and waiting to see his new bride begin her journey to him down the aisle.
  • Joy - seeing my niece stepping into this new chapter of her life.
  • Acknowledgement - hearing, “I’ve heard all about you!” when being introduced to best friends.
  • Gratitude - for the years spent together
  • Connection - while hugging my California-residing nephew for the first time in about a decade.
  • Comfort - when hearing, “I love you” and saying the same back, knowing that  it could never be said enough times to really reflect the “everything” that goes with family.
  • Peace - while really being with my son on a very long ride.
  • Confidence - at knowing, without a doubt, we belong.

When I choose to show up, I choose to be available for myself and those I love.
When I choose to show up, I choose to give to love others and receive love from others.
When I choose to show up, I remind myself of my priorities.
When I choose to show up, I affirm to myself and others my/their inherent worthiness.
When I choose to show up, I create a LIFE I LOVE.

Show up for the 7%. That’s where 95% of the good stuff happens. And it’s 1000% worth it.

Already have. Several times. But I didn't say "You should do this". I just gave a clip of my experience and hopefully they will ponder the possibility for their own benefit. ~ Billie Rogers, client
